States of learning

States of learning

A lot of time in our life is spend in learning new things. But learning new thing can be nightmare for most people. Our brain has to create new neural pathways to learn any new thing. This needs time, effort and energy. But once the path is made we generally keep the learning for whole life. For example learning to ride bicycle is very difficult. But once we learn it we generally do not forget it throughout our lives. This is because we have created permanent neural network in our brain.

To improve our learning skill we need to understand how our brain functions. Our brain operates in two states namely focused and diffused state. When we are highly attentive only our prefrontal cortex of the brain is operational. On the other hand when we are relaxing our brain goes into diffused state. In diffused state we make use of larger section of the brain.Focused state is useful in understanding the problem and diffused state is useful to provide solution to the problem.

To make learning easy we have to learn to use focused and diffused state effectively. To solve a mathematical problem we should initally focus the mind to understand the problem definition.Once the problem is understood we need to put the brain in diffused state.Diffused state  happens when we relaxing, walking, swimming ,sleeping, listening to music etc.In diffused state the larger section of the brain is active and it works on working out solution to the problem. This is the reason why people say one needs to sleep over the problem.

Research shows an average man or women can concentrate only for 2.5 hours out of 8 working hours.Rest of the time is spend in browsing internet, eating, socializing and other activities. But this 6.5 hours is the time when our brains remain in diffused state. This help us to come up with solutions to our problems. So taking regular breaks and relaxing our minds is one of the most effective ways to learn new things and to creatively solve problems.
