Quality work

Getting the best quality Work

It’s been almost almost 7 years since I started working in the field of automobile development. I have to confess its been a great and exciting journey.Thoroughly tested and did many things which I never thought I could or would.I consider myself very fortunate as knowingly or unknowing I got exposed to many areas like sourcing, vendor development, manufacturing, supply chain management, costing, quality assurance, people management, component development, vehicle development, value engineering and now a days computer aided simulations & R&D . My experience tells me that success or failure of any organisation depends on quality and motivation of people working for it. Important question is how to get the people motivated to always deliver the best quality results. As per me most people are self motivated and want to deliver the best results when they come to work. When people understand that their contribution is important in overall scheme of things they deliver great result. Every person working in a company should be able to think from point of view of the end customer and the end user experience. How their work and actions can result in customer satisfaction and great results for the company in long run. I will explain this with a story I read recently.

During the world war two there was a company that was making parachutes. These parachutes were being used for emergency ejection of pilots and dropping the troops on to the battle field. But his company faced a problem  that only 95% of the parachutes manufactured by it opened in the real life situation. This was great tragedy as it meant 5% people using their parachutes were certain to meet with accident or loose their lives. The management of the company tried to explain to its employees that 95% quality was not good enough. But the employees won’t budge to the management demand to improve quality. All the measures employed by management to improve the quality failed as there was no corporation from the employees. Finally management decided that it would ask the workers making the parachutes to physically test it before being dispatched to customers. This made the workers very nervous as now their lives were at stakes due to poor quality being produced by them. The result of this announcement was that the quality of the parachutes improved and reached 100%.This is an extreme example ,but in every company if people can correlate their work to end user experience they will ultimately deliver best results. Its all about taking the ownership and responsibility for one’s action.
