Karma yoga

5 Aspects of karma yoga:

There are primarily four types of yoga.Bhakti,Gyana,Raj and karma yoga.I will take up karma yoga as my subject today.Karma yoga is considered one of the means to attain liberation from cycle of birth and death.Karma yoga in simple terms means working honestly without expecting any thing in return. While performing any action there are five aspects to it.These are doer, tools, environment, energy and destiny.I will explain explain five aspects with the help of an example of farmer cultivating crops.

Doer: A farmer cultivating crops is a doer performing the action of farming.Without a doer no action can exist

Tools:For cultivating crops one needs tools and equipments like plough, tractor etc.Good tools are needed to get desired quality of work.

Environment:It is the place were the farming is being carried out.If farming is carried out in fertile land then only it will be fruitful.

Energy:The performer of action should be energetic and enthusiastic.A lazy person can't get desired results.

Destiny:If all the above aspects are good still if it doesn't rain then the whole activity is gone waste.Destiny is nothing but gods control and divine grace in any action.

If only our actions are right and ethical then we can expect divine grace to be in our favor.I remember reading this from a book on karma yoga.

  2. Nice article Binu.

Few more aspects of Karma Yoga to add to your points:

"Practically Karma yoga is maintaining meditative awareness in every action that we do in daily routine"

Karma is the impression that get created in the antakarana or chitta thru either thought, words or deeds. When work is done with detachment, these impressions are not created on chitta.

But practically if one really one wants to do karma yoga, he should be able to see what impressions already exists in his chitta & he should be able to erase them & then take care that new ones are not created. There are very few realized people who can see whats written in their chitta. Normal person like us is not even aware of what all scrap is existing in our own wallet or cupboard, leave about chitta.

Once Swami Niranjan told that if you want to find out the character & mental condition of a person just look at his wardrobe, the way things are kept indicate the way thoughts are there in the mind.

There are three types of karma
    1. Prarabdh Karma - it is the reason for our birth & it is stored in our causal body. Once this is overcome in current life, we die & proceed to next birth.

    2. Kriyaman karma - it is the life which we are currently living

    3. Sanchit karma - It is the future or destiny which gets decided based on current karma.

One cannot prevent karma from happening. Even if we sit idle, there is thought process going on in subconscious mind which still creates a karma. For yogi like Swami Satyananda also was not able to get out of this cycle on his own.

The solution he has suggested for this is invoking the divine power. It is the basis of Tantra & Bhakti Yoga. Through means of mantra, yantra, mandala, Yajna & Havans divine powers are invoked. All the shatchandi yajna, rajsooya yajna, sri vidya anushtan, sita kalyanam & many more things happening at Munger & Rikhia has the only purpose "Invoking the divine".

On this subject Swami Niranjan has started one more magazine in additon to "Yoga". The magazine name is "Satya Ka Avahan" which means "Invoking the divine". I think i forwarded you the soft copy.

  3. Yoganidra is effective tool to explore impressions on chitta. It takes us to half waking & half dreaming stage where we are exposed to our subconscious or chitta. But it needs strong base to face the subconscious, sometimes experiences can be frightening. It needs proper guidance from guru & consistent practice to develop this capability.
