Everyday on LinkedIn many young engineers contact me seeking a job opportunity or career guidance.So I thought writing this blog giving direction to young graduates.When I passed out from college I didn't have necessary skill to be employed.I made a resume with help of my friend as I had limited access to computer and didn't know how to work with Microsoft word.But I managed to get a job as the economy was doing well and there was need for young engineers.
In last few years what we are seeing is a phenomenon called as jobless growth.There are very few jobs which are getting created in organized sector.Technologies like artificial intelligence and automation has cut on need of human beings in many sectors.Experts predict that in ten years time 50% of today's jobs will be lost to artificial intelligence.In future most of the wealth will be concentrated with few people who will control these technologies.Governments will have to rethink the present economic model.Robots may be taxed where they are replacing people.Ideas like universal basic income will be given serious consideration.But there are new areas where jobs will be created.I will list down few areas which will have better outlook in coming future.
1.Artifical intelligence:Today due to advances in computer science and big data there is considerable advances in areas of machine learning and automation.Learning to program with language like Python,MATLAB etc can help one to get a job.AI and intelligent robots will soon become a normal part of our lives. Technologies like autonomous driving will become a reality soon.Technology like Blockchain will revolutionize banking and financial sector.
2.Renewal energy:Global warming and Paris climate agreement has increased the commitment of all countries towards renewable and clean energy technologies.Countries like China and India are moving fast in these areas to reduce pollution and to reduce their oil import bills.India has committed to 60% solar energy by 2027.This will mean more opportunities in area of solar and wind power.
3.Electric mobility:I am personally of the opinion that by 2025 majority of cars sold across the world will be fully electric.Considerable advancement in battery technology and reduction is cost will make electric vehicle better option than petrol or diesel cars.People with knowledge in areas of electric motors,battery,sensors and power electronics will be in good demand.
4.3D Printing:It will cause a major disruption in manufacturing sector. 3D printing will be extensively used in aerospace,healthcare,construction and automobile industry.People with ability to design will be able produce their own products cheaply using 3D printing.The need for big factories and capital to start a new venture will reduce with advancement in 3d printing.We may go back to the medivial economic model of producing locally and consuming locally.
5.Biomedical:In coming times more emphasis will be on wellness and longevity of human being. Prediction is children born in the year 2017 will go on to live for more than 100 years.So people may have to work longer may be for a period of 50 years and continuously reskill themselves to stay revalent. Techolologies like 3d printing human organs will be in demand.We may soon have chips in human body making us cyborg's.
6.Sharing economy:Most of use use ola or uber which are examples of sharing economies.Sharing economic model will reduce the need to own things.We will only pay for the service we avail.Today sharing economy account to 25% of Chinese economy.One can even rent out an umbrella in China. Technologies are making world fairer and increasing accessibility to the poor.
7.Cyber security:Today we live in a digital world and we hear everyday about hacking.Cyber security issues can bring down whole world to a stand still.There will be increased demand for cyber security experts to guard our defense,banking,power and industrial sectors.
8.Ability to think and emotional intelligence:As computers and robots start doing more of our work, skills like thinking and ability to connect with others will start gaining more importance.Liberal art,understanding of culture,language,listening, negotiating skills and empathy will be given more importance.
9.Virtual reality:Very soon most areas of our life will be taken over by virtual reality.Smart phones as a device will be replaced by virtual reality.People will soon find it difficult to differentiate between reality and virtual reality.Virtual reality will find many new applications like training doctors,pilots,virtual assistant etc.In future people might even have virtual life partners
